Chapter 16

HANK ARRIVED AT THE store a while later with a big grin and dramatically rolled up his sleeves.

“What have we got going on today, boss?” he teased. “You need any heavy lifting? Or does Waffles need attention?”

“Definitely the second.” Waffles was already hopping on Hank’s legs. “Actually, if you don’t mind walking him around the block, that would be amazing!” I was going through my inventory and updating my sales data tracker for the week. I always set ambitious goals and only met them about half of the time. This week, even with the other distractions, I was ahead. Hopefully that would continue.

Hank helped clean and mop the training room when he got back. Waffles chose to follow him around, nipping at the mop and sniffing the cleaning supplies. I could hear Hank telling him to move along or leave the disinfectant spray alone every few minutes. He finished around the same time I finished my spreadsheets.

“This dog.” Hank announced as he came back in and wiped his forehead. He pointed at Waffles. “This dog is a lot.”

“A lot of what?”

“A lot. Waffles is a lot.” He knelt down, and Waffles rolled over for belly scratches. “Do you ever look in his eyes and think there’s a little person in there? A very needy, sweet, opinionated person.”

“Definitely.” I organized my papers and saved all my documents on my laptop. I could see Waffles and Hank bonding out of the corner of my eye. Waffles took a few days to warm up to Hank, but now they were buddies. It helped that Hank now kept a bag of my homemade dog treats in his place and overfed them to Waffles every time he was over. Now Waffles came into Hank’s place, ran over to the cabinet with the treats, and whined.

“So what’s new?” Hank called from behind a shelf of squeaky toys. “We haven’t spoken in, what is it, three days? What’s your three days been like?”

“Nothing interesting!” I called. “Will you keep an eye on Waffles over there? He likes to try to sneak a toy off the shelf. His favorite one is a stuffed eggplant.”

As if on cue, I heard a squeak. Hank told Waffles to drop whatever he had - it was probably the eggplant - and then told Waffles he was a good boy.

“Nothing at all in three days?” Hank said. He emerged from another aisle with Waffles at his heels. “Have I told you about this woman at the Pomegranate?” He leaned over the counter. “That woman who passed away. It’s her daughter-in-law.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Yeah, I thought you’d be interested. People are still talking about the death. Everyone thinks they’re a detective around here. So Telly’s daughter-in-law is this woman named Christina, and she has spent all week going through Telly’s belongings.”

“How long does usually take?” I asked. “Can’t she just move everything to a storage room or something?”

“Not exactly.” Hank flipped through a rack of dog-themed greeting cards on the counter. “Telly was redoing her place, so it’s a mess.
